ERIH Members to Recieve Membership Benefit Boost

The European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) is to produce two digital issues of the German industrial heritage quarterly magazine “Industriekultur- Magazin für Denkmalpflege, Landschaft, Sozial-, Umwelt- und Technikgeschichte” in English exclusively for ERIH members.

ERIH has regularly featured anchor points and regional routes in a separate section of the magazine and reported on ERIH’s work. Thanks to increased co-operation with the publishers, and with funding from the European Union, the first issue of an English-language (digital) version of the journal is now available to members: “Industrial Culture 1/25. Monument Preservation, Landscape, Social History, Environmental History, History of Technology”.

This form of the journal will only be published digitally as a PDF, twice a year. It is not identical to the German-language journal, but contains a special selection of articles for the European audience, including one or two first publications. The e-paper is fully searchable and has active links. Whether this extra membership benefit will be extended beyond two issues, will depend in part on member feed back.

ERIH 2024 Summer School “Shaping Sustainability in Industrial Heritage” Now Booking

For the second time, ERIH, the Berlin Centre for Industrial Heritage and the Department of Culture and Design at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW Berlin) are hosting the European Industrial Heritage Summer School from 10 to 25 August 2024 in Berlin. The intense 14-day programme, which was recognised with the “Best Practice Award” of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe in 2023, is a unique combination of academic discussions, site visits and workshops and offers a holistic learning experience.

This year, the focus is on the question of how industrial heritage sites can become places of sustainable development. The programme is aimed at 18- to 30-year-old international students from various disciplines, including museum studies, cultural studies, history, industrial archaeology, cultural and tourism management, sociology, architecture and urban planning as well as conservation, sustainability and communication studies. Students from other disciplines are also welcome. Eligible are all bachelor, master or doctoral/PhD students who have completed at least their 2nd semester and who are enrolled at a university.

Applications are now open. From 5 April, admissions will be granted on a weekly basis until all 22 places have been filled. Follow this link for booking details:

English Industrial Heritage Sites Invited to Take Part in the 2023 ERIH Barometer Survey

Since 2018 the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) in cooperation with the Department of Statistics and Survey of the Regionalverband Ruhr (Ruhr Regional Association) has carried out an annual survey of industrial heritage sites in Europe. The survey for 2023 is now open.

The data from this pan-European survey helps ERIH to engage with policymakers, the press, and the public. It also helps ERIH to prioritise its activities and projects in order to be most effective in expanding and developing the network and strengthening the sector.

The deadline for this year’s survey is 20th April. There are more than 20 site sin England signed up to to ERIH, and more in Scotland and wales. However, all industrial heritage sites in England with tourist potential are invited to participate, whether they are ERIH members or not.
