Annual Museum Survey: Five Year Trends Published

Each year, Museum Development and the Arts Council conduct the ‘Annual Museum survey’; a comprehensive survey of all things museums (including industrial sites), from visitor numbers to social media followers to staff numbers. Each year’s report holds valuable data that better allows us to understand the sector’s priorities, needs and challenges.

In collaboration with PS Research, all of the Annual Museum Surveys from 2019 – 2024 – have been analysed giving a comprehensive insight into the evolving state of the museums sector right from the eve of Covid-19 to last year. The key findings are:

  • Opening hours have shown a gradual and sustained recovery since the pandemic. However, opening hours in more than a third (36%) of museums are down from 2019-20.
  • While opening hours have recovered, visitor numbers are yet to return to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Museums are engaging more education providers than they were in 2019-20.
  • Social media following of museums has grown significantly since 2019-20.
  • Overall, staffing numbers have changed little since 2019-20. However, contract hires as a percentage of hires is increasing.
  • The number of museum volunteers has generally recovered to pre-pandemic levels, but 2 in 5 museums still record lower numbers.

The report is interactive and available now, you can read it on the Arts Council website.

Deadline for Industrial Heritage Sites in England Survey Extended to 14 June

The deadline for the Industrial Heritage Sites in England Survey 2024 has been extended to the 14th June. The Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust and Heritage Innovation are undertaking this survey of the c.600 publicly accessible and protected industrial heritage sites in England. Funded by Historic England, the 2024 survey is gathering data on these sites which will be compared with similar reports undertaken in 2008 and 1998.

The original deadline for response was the 10th May, but in order to capture as many replies as possible we have decided to extend the deadline and will continue to accept responses until 14th June. We hope this will allow as many sites as possible to take part in the once-in-a- generation survey. This work is being carried out by Heritage Innovation, https://heritageinnovation.org/, and can be accessed here:

Invitation to Take Part in the DCMS Volunteers Survey

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are running an online survey to help them develop guidance for volunteer-involving organisations, groups, and bodies based in England. This is so that volunteering can be done safely and effectively during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

As part of this guidance development, DCMS are inviting employees and volunteers from volunteer-involving organisations, groups, and bodies to complete a short survey, the results of which will be used to help ensure this guidance effectively meets the needs of its users.  The deadline for completing the survey is 5pm on Monday 12 October. Responses are restricted to individuals and organisations in England.
